Heart & Home started as a vision for me in 1992. I had been involved in crafts shows for 7 years at the time so I had made a lot of friends who made unique hand crafted items. I enjoyed planning and organizing events so I knew with some help I could start my own Boutique.
The first 5 years I rented the American Legion auditorium for a Holiday Boutique once a year. However it became unavailable and I had no idea where I could continue it. Going home one day, I was coming down my driveway when I looked at our barn and felt God speak to me and say, “This is where I want you to have your Boutique.
The barn was built in 1930 and hadn’t been cleaned or even painted in years.
My husband and I opened the large double doors and there were birds flying over our heads, bales of hay in one corner and piles of unknown stored items in every other corner.
We decided to go for it and start cleaning and repairing. We find it to be in very good condition and spent many hours getting it ready. My husband used 26 pounds of nails to repair the roof. We borrowed a friend’s lift so I could reach the 25-foot ceiling and I scrubbed every inch of it with a bulk tank brush and disinfectant. When I was cleaning I had birds flying around me and a couple of bats that were not happy about giving up their home. I won’t even get into how the mice felt about it. We sealed off all the vents and openings so the critters could no longer get into the barn.
The night before our first opening, we finished installing the front door around midnight. We were now ready for our first Heart & Home Boutique. It was a success! People loved the relaxed atmosphere of shopping in a barn and finding lots of unique gifts displayed around antiques... Because of the response we decided to be open 3 times a year instead.
You will always find a big variety of items from the 60 artists that come from the five state areas.
